Frequently Asked Questions

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered, complementary branch of healthcare that focuses on combining traditional medical testing with a comprehensive analysis of factors such as medical history, genetics, lifestyle, environment and nutrition. By combining knowledge from multiple sources, functional medicine goes beyond a single treatment for a single diagnosis and focuses on a balance of factors to promote healing and well being. Diagnostic tests are typically noninvasive or minimally invasive biochemical, physiological and electrical evaluations, often involving blood, saliva or urine. These tests indicate body composition (muscle, fat and water), blood sugar, gastrointestinal health, cellular respiration, nutrient metabolism, toxicity, immune/antibody response, hormone secretion activity and much more. This combination of tests is called a functional medicine assessment (FMA).

For more information, please review Achieve Your Optimal Health: A Guide to Functional Medicine Assessments. Our functional medicine treatment plans focus on nutrition and exercise, the removal of allergens and toxins, and supplementation of pharmaceutical grade vitamins, minerals and herbs in the body to improve overall health.

How is functional medicine different from traditional medicine?

Traditional medicine is focused on the treatment of specific symptoms, body parts or conditions, often through the use of prescription medications or surgery. Functional medicine is a patient-centered approach to care focused on identifying clinical imbalances that can affect overall health and disease conditions. These imbalances are identified by analyzing a variety of internal and external factors that can affect your health or disease condition.

What is the Pro-Adjuster?

The Pro-Adjuster Helps to Fine Tune the Nervous System

Imagine thirty to forty years ago if we told you that dentistry would be painless, that doctors would watch television to perform surgeries, that brain surgery for tumors could be done with a laser, that fetuses could be operated on within the uterus, that knife-less surgery could be performed - you would not have believed us. By the same token would you believe us if we told you that Chiropractic/Neurological/Pain Relief treatments and reorientation of the nervous system could be done comfortably, while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or sudden movements? Would you believe that newborns as well as the elderly with osteoporosis can be treated safely and gently? Thanks to advances in technology - specifically, the Pro-Adjuster - they can!

View the Pro-Adjuster introduction video (above right) to learn more about this exciting technology.

The Pro-Adjuster uniquely blends computer and engineering technologies with Chiropractic/Pain Relief in order to both analyze and treat the human body in such a way that was never before realized. The potential for the human being to end pain and to achieve peak nervous system function has never been greater.

How can anything so gentle and comfortable change my spine?

Pro-Adjuster in Action

The Pro-Adjuster is the most advanced Chiropractic analysis and treatment instrument in existence today. Utilizing a precise oscillating force with uninterrupted motion, the Pro-Adjuster is able to increase the mobility of the spinal segments, muscle tissue, and joints, by reducing or enabling motion in the abnormal areas. In other words, the Pro-Adjuster is "unsticking" the joint and releasing tension in the muscle tissue. Have you ever seen a woodpecker tapping in an oscillating fashion on a tree? It is hard to believe, but you can watch them bore right through the hardest wood! The Pro-Adjuster taps in much the same way but uses soft tips that are comfortable to the human body and don't create damage but provide benefit and allow the body to heal.

This is the same technology and same type of instrument that NASA engineers have used in the space program in order to evaluate the integrity of the ceramic cooling tiles on the outside of the space shuttle. Because Dr. Oxenrider is one of only a few doctors in the country to be trained in the Pro-Adjuster technology, United Wellness Center can provide you the same level of care as that given to multi-million dollar spacecraft.

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline focused on the recuperative nature of the human body and nervous system improvement through diet, exercise, stress reduction and adjustments to the body. Pain and disease can often be linked to an abnormal function of the nervous system due to irregular spinal function which cause stress on the nerve tissues and decreased mobility of the joints. Chiropractors adjust segments of the spinal column and other musculoskeletal body structures to improve operation of the nervous system. As the nervous system improves your body is better able to heal without the use of prescription drugs or surgery. United Wellness Center is concerned with more than just back pain, we strive to restore and maintain health and wellness through detailed analyses of disease factors (case history, nutrition, family history, exercise) and offer comprehensive treatment options including traditional chiropractic care, decompression therapy, massage therapy, rehabilitation and more. See our services for more information.

The causes of these symptoms are varied: Motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, repetitive motion, stress or other aggravating conditions, such as arthritis or fibromylagia. Because vertebral subluxations can appear at any point in our life, chiropractic care can be used for people of all ages for many normal health problems or to maintain health and fitness. No matter what your health condition is, United Wellness Center can determine an effective treatment plan to help you achieve your optimal health.

How long does treatment last?

The average established patient office visit last from 5 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the type of treatment plan. The number of recommended treatment sessions varies. Some patients seek a treatment plan to alleviate immediate or chronic pain, which may be resolved with only several treatments. Other patients, for example health conscious individuals, use chiropractic as part of a preventive care or optimal wellness regimen that may require longer treatment sessions. Patients can also benefit from regular checkups to identify new injuries and prevent relapses. Whether your goal is pain relief, recovery or wellness care, United Wellness Center delivers customized treatment plans. During your initial consultation we will assess your age, health condition and personal goals, and conduct relevant diagnostic tests. After a comprehensive evaluation of these factors, we will develop a treatment schedule to best fit your needs.

Do you treat children?

Yes. Children can experience spinal column trauma at birth that can affect the spine as it grows. Children who are physically active can also become injured from sports or normal childhood activity. Left uncorrected, childhood subluxation can result in additional developmental problems and spinal curvatures. Early detection can often help correct and prevent future spinal problems. United Wellness Center is pleased to offer gentle and corrective chiropractic care to children and infants.

Do you treat pregnant women?

Yes, United Wellness Center treats pregnant women experiencing back pain and headaches due to additional weight gain and stresses on the body. Women gain an average of 25-35 pounds when pregnant. Additional weight can cause muscle strains due to compensation, joint discomfort and stress on spinal discs. Chiropractic manipulation (especially treatments utilizing the Pro Adjuster) is safe for pregnant women and offers a drug-free alternative to treating back pain. United Wellness Center also offers nutrition and exercise planning consultations to help women enjoy a healthy and pain-free pregnancy.
